SPRING/SUMMER HAIR TRENDS: PLAITS AND BRAIDS

There’s always much emphasis on upcoming fashion trends with particular focus on textures, prints and colour. However, don’t forget that it’s also the season to let our hair down. The Valentino (Ready-To-Wear) Spring/Summer collection saw halo and milkmaid braids worn loose and casual. The hairstyles were accompanied with patterned lace set upon soft draping materials to give a romantic and fairytale atmosphere.

Michael Kors’ ‘ropey’ plaits were reminiscent of Disney princess Rapunzel’s style; a modern twist was given to the traditional fishtail braid by teasing sections of hair to emphasise messy volume at the crown of the head. Bouquets of flowers were swapped with leather cords as it intertwined within the braid - a nod to the designer’s clothing collection of Safari-inspired pieces.

Simple but tousled side plaits were worn with dynamic floral prints at Ashish. The playful hairstyle went hand-in-hand with the paper bag waisted trousers, botanical slouchy jumpers, and brick printed vests to give gardening a stylish look. The side plait wasn’t just featured in fashion shows, Victoria Beckham tweeted a photo of herself sporting the style with the caption ‘baggy braid in Beijing!’ yesterday. The designer is currently on tour in China on a series of promotional events after the recent launch of her clothing collection, and the ‘baby’ Range Rover.  Following the release of The Hunger Games, the heroine Katniss Everdeen’s signature side braid has also been continuously recreated. Versatility is key with this style as it offers sophisticated chic but also an effortless and natural look for a series of events and occasions.
